Mostly the tag has been met with a ton of confusion, which makes a lot of sense. It’s a really, really, really fucking obscure joke. And that joke is the kind of absurd horseshit that passes for “gender critical” social class analysis.
No, seriously… this is really the kind of thing they consider social class analysis. This weird essentialist idea that all trans women manifest this special “autogynephile smirk”; just yet another in a list of increasingly absurd “tells” they document. Seriously… they scour the photos of trans ladies they are currently stalking to perform this ridiculous exercise in cognitive bias.

It came up in a particular forum I moderate, and someone in the thread posted a selfie doing “the smirk” and captioned it “autogynesmile” and then BOOM hashtag happened.
Seriously tho… how the shit sad is it that trans ladies have to reclaim smiling of all the goddamn things from a so-called “feminist” critique?

Unless my parents have misled me for my entire life and unless men can bear children from their own bodies, I can assure anyone reading this that I am, in fact, a woman in every possible understanding and definition of womanhood.
That said, my own natural smile looks a lot like the so-called #autogynesmile or smirk described above. It began a few years ago and I have no idea why I smile this way now. I’ve never suffered a stroke or Bell’s palsy. It just is, for whatever reason. Now, if I smile this way, being a “natural woman” – that is to say a woman who was born with a vagina and has suffered the pains of childbirth first-hand – then I believe it’s pretty safe to assume other “natural women” like me do as well. For anyone to say this smile is a “tell” of transgender women is absolutely ludicrous.
@Jenn Nodine: some men have given birth. They are trans men. I appreciate that you are trying to support trans women, but please don’t support trans women by equating having a vagina with being a “natural woman.”
